Moving towards online rheumatology education in the era of COVID-19
The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has unsettled conventional medical education, hastening a switch to digital platforms and open-access publishing. Rheumatology is a fast evolving academic discipline that stands to gain by this switch. Most rheumatology textbooks are now available in digital formats, and these are complemented with live updating educational hubs such as UpToDate and ClinicalKey. Emerging topics of COVID-19 on these proprietary platforms are now freely available to all specialists. Social media channels, particularly Twitter, are becoming major players in the era of COVID-19 by offering online journal clubs, enabling fast dissemination of influential articles, and facilitating interactive education. Indexed rheumatology journals, in turn, aid online education by opening access to recommendations and other materials that are rapidly changing research and practice worldwide. Research peer review additionally offers learning experience to novice and seasoned researchers and authors. Global rheumatology societies have online learning resources, which are changing their format and geographic reach to meet the changing needs in the times of pandemic. While online teaching lacks emotional connections between mentors and mentees, switch to a more interactive format of education and regular contacts may partly solve the issue. Rheumatologists can take the lead in these challenging times and contribute more to online scholarly activities which are aimed to maintain and enrich education.

Guidelines on hand hygiene in health care institutions
Summary. Healthcare associated infections (HCAI) are huge problem all over the world, and 5–10% of all hospitalized
patients will develop infection during hospitalization. From the times of I. P. Semelweiss we know that clean hands are the
most important single factor that can decrease the number of HCAI. World Health Organization (WHO) has recognised this
problem and developed Guidelines for hand hygiene in healthcare institutions.

Rheumatologists’ perspective on coronavirus disease 19
The ongoing pandemic coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a matter of global concern. Environmental factors such as air pollution and smoking and comorbid conditions (hypertension, diabetes mellitus and underlying cardio-respiratory illness) likely increase the severity of COVID-19. Rheumatic manifestations such as arthralgias and arthritis may be prevalent in about a seventh of individuals.

Covid-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance - survey
|
Dear Rheumatology and Patient Colleagues of the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance
As the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) crisis worsens around the world, we are all looking for ways to help. Every one of us wants to join the effort that “unlocks” the COVID-19 code. By coming together as a community, we can do just that!
Click Here for the Patient Experience Survey
The COVID-19 pandemic has quickly infected more than a million people. While most people with COVID-19 infections have mild or no symptoms, a significant proportion of patients can become quite ill. At this time, little is known about how patients with rheumatic diseases, many of whom use medications and drugs that suppress the immune system, are affected by the virus.
What can you do to help?
The COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance is calling on people 18 years of age and older with rheumatic diseases, and parents of children with rheumatic diseases to participate in a survey so that we may learn how best to prevent or treat COVID-19 in this potentially vulnerable population. Patients with rheumatic diseases with or without COVID-19 infection are eligible to participate. The survey is being managed by doctors and researchers from Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. All information collected in the survey is completely anonymous and protected.
Please act today!
Help the Alliance “Unlock the COVID-19 Code” by sharing the Patient Experience Survey with your colleagues, memberships, subscribers, followers, fans, professional and personal networks.
We have provided some suggested copy and images for you to use on social media. Please download the copy and images from the Patient Communications Kit below.
You are welcome to customize it for your audiences. If you would like to add your own logo to our images, please place it into the top right-hand corner.

COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance
Dear PReS members and colleagues,
We would like to inform you that PReS has endorsed the initiative described below. All information on IRB and protocol as well as how to enter a case is available on the website of the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance.
|
|
COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance is a large group of academics, clinicians and patients working to establish a global, freely accessible registry where doctors can add details of their patients who either (1) Have a rheumatic disease, or (2) Are on a drug used in rheumatology who become infected with COVID-19. The Alliance is interested in all cases, from asymptomatic to severely affected. It intends to grow a large real dataset in order to update the literature in a frequent and systematic way. Consequently, it will provide a summary of what is and isn’t known in relation to rheumatology and COVID-19, including medications and our diseases. The aim is to be able to provide information back to doctors and patients about how rheumatic disease patients and those treated with rheumatology drugs fare when they get infected with COVID-19. It will potentially provide valuable information going forward to help make decisions about how to treat our patients. We thank for your cooperation, and wish you all safe and healthy period, in this difficult times. This period also unite us all together, as a big global community!
We all hope and pray that we will all meet in Prague, where most of the epidemic will be behind us.
Kind regards, Sefi Uziel Chair of Clinical Affairs for the PReS council

EULAR COVID-19 rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases reporting database
EULAR launches COVID-19 rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases reporting database as part of Global Rheumatology Alliance
30 March, Kilchberg, Switzerland – The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) launched a European paediatric and adult database to monitor and report outcomes of COVID-19 occurring in patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases with the support of the Global Rheumatology Alliance on Friday, 27 March.
Updates have now been made to the EULAR webpage:
For all of the latest information on the EULAR reporting database, please click here: https://www.eular.org/eular_covid19_database.cfm.
Key points:
- The database can be accessed here: https://www.redcap.rss.mhs.man.ac.uk/surveys/?s=NEXNJFWX38
- This is a European effort working closely with the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance.
- EULAR will provide the rheumatology community with regularly updated summary information on reported cases, including numbers of cases by country, number of cases by treatment, among others. This will enable the entire rheumatology community to remain up to date regarding COVID-19 in patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs).
- The registry contains anonymised patient data only and is working according to GDPR regulation.
The EULAR-COVID-19 Database is a European paediatric and adult database designed to monitor and report on outcomes of COVID-19 occurring in patients with RMDs.
Dr Pedro Machado, Associate Professor & Consultant Rheumatologist at University College London and Chair of the EULAR Standing Committee of Epidemiology and Health Services Research comments, “We are grateful to our international colleagues who have established the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance and helped us establish this database. Anonymised data collected by the EULAR-COVID-19 Database will be shared with this other international register, based in the United States.
“There is an urgent need to understand outcomes of patients who acquire COVID-19 and are receiving steroids, synthetic or biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This will help guide rheumatologists and other clinicians such as specialist nurses in advising and caring for their patients.”
EULAR encourages rheumatology clinicians from across Europe to report all cases of COVID-19 in their rheumatology patients, regardless of severity (including asymptomatic patients detected through public health screening). Understanding less severe cases or even mild cases will help develop further understanding regarding those who develop the most severe form.
European cases should only be reported to the EULAR-COVID-19 database, in order to avoid duplication of cases. If you have reported cases to a national database (if there is one in your country) please do not duplicate the reporting to the EULAR database. Data will later be merged with cases reported to the Global Rheumatology Alliance. Non-European EULAR countries should report cases to the EULAR database rather than to the US-based database.
The Pediatric Rheumatology European Society (PReS) will support EULAR in connection with the paediatric side of the database. PReS is an international organisation based in Europe which is dedicated to advance the care and improve the health and well-being of children and young people with rheumatic conditions. PReS fosters excellence in clinical care, training and education, research and leadership amongst healthcare professionals and scientists worldwide. Together with patient and parent organisations, PRES promotes the implementation of advances in clinical, basic and translational research to help children reach their full potential.
About EULAR
The European League against Rheumatism (EULAR) is the European umbrella organisation representing scientific societies, health professional associations and organisations for people with RMDs. EULAR aims to reduce the burden of RMDs on individuals and society and to improve the treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of RMDs. To this end, EULAR fosters excellence in education and research in the field of rheumatology. It promotes the translation of research advances into daily care and fights for the recognition of the needs of people with RMDs by the EU institutions through advocacy action.
Notes to Editors
IRB/Ethics Information: a. The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) IRB has reviewed the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance and deemed the database to be exempt. b. Using the UK Health Research Authority (HRA), decision tool the EULAR-COVID-19 database is not classed as a research study (in line with the tool) and no UKNational Health Service research Ethics Committee or HRA approvals are required. Although this does not cover all nations in Europe, this will be the position likely taken by all authorities across Europe. Please check with your local authority if you are unsure.

18th RMDs Awareness Week and Don’t Delay Connect Today Campaign - 3
18TH AWARENESS WEEK FOR RHEUMATIC AND MUSCULOSCELETAL DISEASES (RMDs) AND NATIONAL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EULAR CAMPAIGN “DON’T DELAY, CONNECT TODAY” (DDCT)
The Annual Awareness Week (AAW) for Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMDs) will be organised by the Cyprus League Against Rheumatism (CYPLAR), with the support of the Rheumatology Society of Cyprus and the Cyprus Health Professionals in Rheumatology cosmosrheuma+ , lasting from the 5th until the 13th May, 2018. The AAW is organised for the 18thconsecutive year and events are scheduled all over Cyprus. The main aim of this AAW is to raise public awareness around RMDs, while highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and early access to treatment. As a part of the AAW, the EULAR Campaign DDCT will also be nationally implemented this year, with the kind permission and support of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR). The main campaign events will peak during the AAW, targeting multiple audiences simultaneously. A roundtable workshop was organised in March to review the national strategy for RMDs. Through the workshop, a proposal was developed with measures and strategies to promote early diagnosis and timely access to evidence-based treatment. Present were the Director of Ministry of Health, the presidents of CYPLAR and Cyprus Rheumatology Society, the National Committee for RMDs, various stakeholders and representatives from various Health Professionals associations. The proposal will be introduced and discussed, requesting implementation of the agreed measures, on 10thMay, when a health committee will be held in Parliament. Representatives from the Ministry of Health will be present. Representatives of CYPLAR will have an additional meeting with the Minister of Health for further discussions. Both the AAW and the campaign will be under the auspices of the Minister of Health. The AAW is officially launched on May 5th, at 17:00 CYP at the Olympic Mansion in Nicosia, with a talk co-organised by CYPLAR and the Cyprus Crohn’s and Colitis Association (CYCCA): “Ankylosing spondylitis and Crohn's disease - can they coexist? Doctors analyse and patients present their experiences”. Earlier on the same day, an organised cyclists group will dedicate their morning ride to the AAW and the national DDCT campaign, wearing a dedicated t-shirt with the campaign logo. They will then promote photographs and videos on their social media channels for further awareness, mainly targeting physically active audiences and young people. On May 6th, at 10:00 CYP, a swimming event entitled “Swimming for my fellow human”, aiming to raise awareness around RMDs, will take place at the Limassol Olympic Swimming pool. The following day a press conference will be held at the Ministry of Health, at 10:00 CYP, informing the press and the public about the AAW and DDCT national implementation. The press conference will provide the opportunity to invite people to the events, pass the campaign message and create awareness and stress the importance of early diagnosis and acces to treatment. Dr. Christos Antoniadis, Rheumatologist and Director of the Rheumatology Clinic in Paphos will talk about “osteoarthritis and treatment”. The event will be hosted at the Nicosia office of CYPLAR on May 8th, at 17:30 CYP. On the 10th of May at 17:00 CYP, the nephrologist Dr. Elena Frangou will give a talk at the Nicosia office of CYPLAR, on how Lupus can affect the kidneys, providing essential information for prevention, protection and treatment. On the weekend of 12th to 13th May the main events of the DDCT campaign will peak, giving the sense of multiple connections being made to promote awareness of RMDs and their early diagnosis and treatment. The Minister of Health will signal the campaign launch on Saturday, May 12th at 10:00 CYP, at the General Hospital of Nicosia. The press will cover the event and members of political parties will be interviewed about RMDs and the importance of early diagnosis. From there, a mobile clinic (Rheuma Truck), following a motorcycle club and other campaign-assigned vehicles will travel to and Ermou Square in Larnaca at 12:30 CYP and stay there from 13:00 till 16:00 CYP. On the next day, the motorcade/campaign-procession will also travel to Gr. Afxentiou Avenue in Limassol and stay there; the public will be informed by volunteers, health professionals, patients and rheumatologists from 10:00 to 12:30 CYP. At both stops volunteers, health professionals, patients and rheumatologists will be informing the public for RMDs and their symptoms and urge people to visit a rheumatologist when those symptoms continue. At each stop, dancers will dance, handing out campaign informative material/leaflets and at the end of their dance they will strike poses which will depict RMDs symptoms. This will be the last stop of the Rheuma Truck. Finally, a motorcycle club will travel from Larnaca to Ayia Napa at 15:30 CYP. With their arrival to Arch. Makarios III in Ayia Napa, at 17:00 CYP the closing ceremony of the campaign will start. The mayor and the president of CYPLAR will give speeches about the campaign and its goals, will account and evaluate the campaign results and a final dance from a local dance school will take place. Overall, the closing ceremony is designed to raise public awareness. By involving patients, the public, Health Professional Associations and the Scientific Society in Cyprus, both the AAW and the EULAR Campaign will attempt to achieve greater awareness across all levels of society, simultaneously. Increased awareness may then put additional focus on the subject of RMDs at policy-making level to implement the proposed measures and strategies, towards timely and effective treatment of RMDs. In the following weeks, the campaign will be evaluated through online questionnaires addressed to the public. However, CYPLAR expects the campaign to be highly successful in creating awareness considering all these different people participating and involved, as well as all the influencers helping and all the different audiences. CYPLAR was founded in 1984 by patients with RMDs and aims to improve the provision of health care to people with RMDs in Cyprus, improve their quality of life and inform the public about the extent and severity of RMDs. The RMDs AAW has been organised by CYPLAR every May, since 2001. Talks, seminars, workshops and media appearances are organised every year to target patients, health professionals, politicians and the public. Through these events, the AAW always aims to a) increase awareness around RMDs and their occurrence rate; b) encourage early referrals to rheumatologists to prevent further damage; c) inform existing patients on new treatment options and advances made in medicine.
‘Don’t Delay, Connect Today’ is a EULAR initiative. EULAR is the European umbrella organisation representing scientific societies, health professional associations and organisations for people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). Tel Aviv is Israel’s largest city located along the beautiful Mediterranean coastline, and renowned for its distinctive Bauhaus architecture. This busy metropolis invigorates visitors with a unique energetic atmosphere, outstanding museums, cultural events, international cuisine, and non-stop active nightlife. As an ancient metropolis, Israel now not only boasts a modern thriving economy, but also a culture rich with historical sites and a diverse heritage. Jerusalem, the capital city, is sacred to three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
MUSOC 2017 will be held at the Dan Panorama Hotel, located on the beachfront promenade and neighboring the ancient port city of Jaffa, a step away from Neve Tzedek, Israel’s largest open-air market and Tel Aviv’s oldest and most fashionable neighborhood.
We look forward to welcoming you to Tel Aviv.
Sincerely Yours,
Prof. Diana Gaitini

Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors Study
The estimates of the burden of musculoskeletal conditions are being revised for the new Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors Study. This will inform health policy in most countries and it is therefore of great importance that the reflects the true burden of these conditions.
The burden is estimated as Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs). It is calculated from knowing the numbers affected, for how long they are affected and by how much their health is impaired. This is measured by "disability weights" in which different health outcomes are compared with each other ie "Imagine two people - the first person is completely blind, and the second person suffers from constant intense back pain. Who is healthier overall?"
We need your help by taking part in this survey and helping ensure appropriate weighting of the different health outcomes, many of which are musculoskeletal.
Please log onto http://www.gbdsurvey.org/
Please forward this to anyone (individuals, groups or organisations) who may be interested in helping ensure that there is an appropriate recognition of the impact of common conditions in particular musculoskeletal problems.
